Krystian Lada, our General & Artistic Director, is the first recipient of Mortier Next Generation Award
Our founder, General & Artistic Director, Krystian Lada is the first recipient of Mortier Next Generation Award for exceptional talent in the field of new opera and music theatre.
The MORTIER Next Generation prize is awarded every two years and will help carry on the spirit of this dynamic approach to nurturing the present and bringing it into the future. Because Mortier was an outspoken European, this prize has been conceived as an international initiative. It is currently backed by four European partners: the Ministry of Culture & Science of the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany), the Fondation Pierre Bergé / Yves Saint-Laurent (France), the Flanders Regional Government(Belgium) and the Salzburger Festspiele (Austria). The support of these partners roots the prize in the cities where Gerard Mortier lived and worked over the course of his career; as Directeur de Théâtre de La Monnaie/De Munt in Brussels, artistic director of the Salzburger Festspiele, founding artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale and Directeur de l’Opéra national de Paris.
Prizewinners are selected by a jury. The jury includes the initiators of the MORTIER Next Generation prize, as well as the current winner of the (non-paid) Mortier Award for Musical Theatre, which is awarded every two years to a person whose work is seen as exemplifying Mortier’s legacy. Friends and supporters of the Mortier Award and the MORTIER Next Generation prize may nominate suitable candidates.
